Review: .riess engineering Update 19.0

Read everything about this years user meeting for the integration of PTC Creo into SAP PLM.

On February 20, 2019 the 19th .riess engineering UPDATE meeting took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Ettlingen near Karlsruhe.

Visitor record at UPDATE 19.0

Today’s Intelligent Enterprise and Cloud technologies provide companies with great opportunities and are key elements of a successful digital strategy. However, this is only true if the processes established and standardized in SAP PLM can be extended and optimized further. The event’s presentations therefore pivoted around the support options provided by SAP ECTR and the related integration products offered by .riess engineering.

This year’s UPDATE 19.0 was designed as a “User meeting for PTC Creo and PTC Windchill Interfaces for SAP ECTR” — a novelty in the event’s history. In addition to presentations of strategic and functional innovations for SAP Engineering Control Center (SAP ECTR) and the SAP ECTR interface to PTC Creo, a parallel track featured the introduction of the SAP ECTR interface to PTC Windchill, a joint development by .riess engineering and SAP (a first-timer at an UPDATE event).

SAP Keynote by Georg Kube

A record number of more than 130 participants of over 50 companies attended the event, which was complemented by information booths of the .riess engineering partners SAP, CENIT, CIDEON/EPLAN, DSC, SEAL Systems and XPLM who presented their own solution offerings in the SAP PLM and SAP Engineering Control Center environment.

The event was opened by Wolfgang Schukowski, Managing Director of .riess engineering europe gmbh, who extended a warm welcome to all participants. The subsequent SAP keynote “The digital twin as the foundation of an end-to-end product lifecycle management” delivered by Georg Kube started the day’s series of presentations. As the Global Vice President Industrial Machinery & Components of SAP SE, Mr. Kube designs and markets industry solutions based on SAP’s entire portfolio of products and technologies and drives the group’s regional business.

SAP ECTR presentation of SAP Product Owner and .riess Team

Two SAP product owners presented their SAP ECTR strategy and the benefits of using SAP ECTR both in direct combination with PTC Creo and indirectly through PTC Windchill using their respective solutions. The following presentations were held on parallel tracks. The .riess engineering team gave live demonstrations of the functionalities and processes (change and approval processes for CAD documents) lined out in the previous presentations, proving that the SAP solutions developed by .riess engineering enable customers to design and implement end-to-end PLM processes even across system boundaries.

Success Story „Hensoldt Optronics goes for ECTR”

Another highlight was the customer presentation entitled “Hensoldt Optronics goes for ECTR” by Hensoldt Optronics, a technology leader in cutting-edge optronic systems who successfully migrated several international sites from CAD-Desktop to SAP ECTR throughout 2018. In an authentic and entertaining presentation, the two project managers, Karolina Pusch and Markus Feil, took the audience on a journey through their CAD-Desktop to SAP ECTR migration project and described both the challenges they encountered and the solutions they eventually selected. Despite a very tight time frame, the project’s results exceeded all expectations. The project's success was due not only to the available standard functionality of SAP ECTR and the integration for PTC Creo which made the project possible in the first place but also to the perfect cooperation of the two companies’ project teams (Hensoldt Optronics and .riess engineering).

Stefan Ziegler presents the SAP strategy „Design to Operate“

Stefan Ziegler of SAP rounded off the day by explaining why the mapping of integrated and digital processes throughout the entire value chain is a key factor for success in today’s business, and stressed the particular importance of the links between digital processes and the “real” world and its physical products. In his closing presentation entitled „Design to Operate in the Intelligent Enterprise: “From digital to real” — and what it really means“ he outlined how the early stages of product development can be integrated with the overall lifecycle of a product and described the benefits provided by SAP’s strategy “Design to Operate”.

A short Q&A with a visibly satisfied audience concluded a day packed with information. All participants were then invited to a champagne reception and evening buffet at the RHAPSODY restaurant. There, customers, interested parties, SAP specialists, the CAD integration partners and the .riess engineering team enjoyed several more hours of talks and excellent food in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.

As every year, the “SAP ECTR interface to PTC Creo” task force met at the premises of .riess engineering in Karlsbad the day after the UPDATE event.

“The record number of participants in the two events organized by .riess engineering in Ettlingen and Karlsbad in February shows that there is a huge increase in interest in our solutions for integrating PTC Creo and PTC Windchill with SAP and for optimizing engineering processes in SAP PLM. This will help secure the success and growth of our company .riess engineering in the years ahead,” summarizes Schukowski.

We would like to express our gratitude to all participants and guests for these two very successful days!

The next .riess UPDATE 20.0 is scheduled for February 2020. We will notify you of the exact date in good time.
